Scott of the Antartic / Sinfonia Antartica

 



Scott of the Antarctic (1948) es una película de Charles Frend que trata sobre la historia de La British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Ralph Vaughan Williams estuvo a cargo de la composición de la música homónima para dicho film, fue interpretada en su momento por The Philharmonia Orchestra, dirigida por Ernest Irving.

Tiempo después, algunos elementos musicales de Scott of the Antarctic fueron desarrollados por Vaughan Williams de manera más extensa para ser integrados a la Shymphony No. 7 o Sinfonia Antartica. Esta obra se estrenó en 1953 en Manchester, interpretada por la Orquesta Hallé and Choir, con la soprano Margaret Richie, dirigida por Sir John Barbirolli.

La British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) fue dirigida por el capitán Robert Falcon Scott. Para viajar al último continente se utilizó el barco oceanográfico llamado Terra Nova. Fue una expedición de carácter científico, con diferentes equipos, misiones y actividades. El equipo del polo tenía como objetivo alcanzar el Polo Sur por primera vez en la historia de la humanidad, y estaba conformado por Robert F. Scott, Edward Wilson, Henry Bowers, Lawrence Oates y Edgar Evans.

La película se centra en la historia del viaje al Polo Sur y de su trágico desenlace, haciéndo énfasis en las cualidades personales y de liderazgo del capitán Scott.

En la tumba de hielo de Scott, Wilson y Bowers, la cruz de madera tiene inscrito un verso del poema Ulises de Alfred Tennyson:

 

esforzarse por buscar, encontrar y no ceder
